You can meet Fitz Vanderpool at this year's Word on the Street festival, Sunday, September 27, Victoria Park, Kitchener. This festival marks the official book launch of The Whip - the story of how a hometown boy made good on the world boxing scene, ultimately bringing home a world title. Co-authors Fitz Vanderpool and Alexandra Cole will be at the Waterloo Region Record tent from 12:30pm - 1:30pm. Kitchener's other famous boxer says he's just an ordinary guy trying to do extraordinary things. "Many people don't know there's a world champion boxer living right here, in Kitchener," Fitz Vanderpool conceded. "But, the things I want to do, the goals I have right now, and the dreams I need to fulfill, can all be done here, in Kitchener."

So, after self-promoting and selffinancing himself to winning five professional boxing titles, including the World Boxing Federation's Super Welterweight World Championship Title, what else could Vanderpool want to accomplish? His mission, he says, is to inspire people to follow their dreams. It's become his motto, and the underlying message he tries to leave –whether with the students at his boxing academy, the young people he meets during his school tours, or basically, anyone he strikes up conversations with.

"With hope, it's possible - that's the message behind WHIP," Vanderpool explained. "You have to hold tight to your dream, surround yourself with good people, and remember that we are all gifted, and each of us can do anything we want. Keep trying...failure is never final."

Vanderpool is so committed to his message that he dishes out serious punishment to anyone who says things are hopeless.

"In my gym, ‘I can't' is a swear word, and worth 10 push-ups," he jokes.

Vanderpool has just completed co-authoring his biography with Kitchener writer Alexandra Cole. Cole describes the dynamic boxer as someone with a heart of gold who is always there for his "kids". "I'm quite sure Fitz has no idea the level of impact and influence he has over his students," Cole said. "He is never too busy for them, he'll take their cell calls whenever they call, he really cares about them and believes in them. And they know it."

Cole added that Vanderpool's road to success was a long, tough journey – making his accomplishments that much more impressive.

Vanderpool comes from a family of boxers. The middle child of five boys, he jokes that most of his childhood was spent seeking attention and getting noticed.

Vanderpool explained that his family got involved in boxing after his older brother was bullied at school.

"My dad wanted us to learn how to stand up for ourselves, to learn self-defense," he said. "I started when I was nine-years-old and life suddenly became all boxing and school. In 1984, when I was 17, I decided to leave the sport. But in 1988, I reached a turning point in my life."

While watching the 1988 Olympics, Vanderpool couldn't shake the feeling that he should be there. In 1989, he came back to boxing with the hopes of going to the 1992 Olympics. He had, however, three strikes against him: he was older, he was no longer connected with key people in the sport, and he had no financial backing. "None of that mattered," he said. "I wanted to be a champ. I trained, I spent all my savings – I was back in the sport." Later, at 26 years old, Vanderpool decided to turn professional, despite the fact that most boxers are considered to be in their prime at 19 to 21 years old.

A series of fights, a stream of losses, and a lot of politics followed him. What never left, was his belief in his dream.

"I believed in myself – certainly partly due to my upbringing and important people who have influenced my life. The biggest lesson I learned was that you have to start with yourself and believe in yourself. If you don't ... who will?" Today, Vanderpool runs a boxing and fitness academy for students of all ages; and he even offers fitness classes for women.

"Many people just enjoy using the gym to work out," he said, "but self-defense is also a key thing we teach."

Vanderpool said boxing is more than a contact sport.

"It's a one-on-one sport and you – and only you – are ultimately accountable for your success or your failures. What you take from your training, how you fine-tune your skills and how you handle the situation all contribute to the end result," he said.

Vanderpool's achievements have been recognized by both his peers and his community. He was named Kitchener-Waterloo's Inaugural Athlete of the Year, was recognized for his contribution to fire safety and named International Fire Safety Ambassador, and was recently inducted into the Waterloo County Hall of Fame – the first boxer ever to be granted this prestigious recognition. It's this induction that prompted him to write his memoir.

"It's such an honour to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and even more of an honour to have that happen while I'm still healthy, active and alive. It felt like the time was right to tell my message of hope and following your dreams. My father once told me how proud he was of my accomplishments - so proud that he could die tomorrow a very happy man. I just wanted to document my journey and hopefully inspire others," he explained.

"I tell my son, success is measured in accomplishments, not dollars and cents," he said. "Money doesn't validate you, your actions do."

As Summer Comes to an End

Posted in News and Info by S&M on 9/8/2009

Which class will you frequent?

So with the final day of The CNE coming to a close yesterday, and the oh so familiar sight of yellow school buses making frequent stops at each city street ( making me 10 minutes late for work)...we know that summer is over :(. Sad days for some as school is in full swing, good days for others, those parents that bid their youngins farewell at that city street corner as their offspring bord that yellow bus. I myself am watching the public school empty on the first bell...what ever happened to staying late and banging earsers... wait a minute do they still use blackboards and chalk???

With school back in swing P.E. class should be outside still, well at least for a few months. P.E. being a class that all children have to attend ( I think you can get out with a note from your parents or a doctor) I am thinking why not make this the year you help your child enjoy Physical Education. Or better yet why not bring them out to a class over at The W.H.I.P and have them educated by Coach Fitz Vanderpool. I know many kids hate gym class...I personally loved it but this isn't about me..so bring them out. Let Coach Fitz and his very pleasant and educated instructors show your child that Physical Education can be fun.

Classes are scheduled weekday evenings and Saturdays, bring your children by and perhaps you and your kids can enjoy a class or 2 together. Ages range from the very young to the very (healthy and active) old. Not only does this allow you that bondable time that is so precious but also it helps every body keep fit while having fun!

Hope to see some new faces @ 131 Charles and I am so very glad to see all of the old ones too!

September 18th, the only place to be in Kitchener

With September 18th FAST approaching The WHIP anxiously awaits the day! Many fighters are dedicated to the gym and making sure all their info is in, I.E. medicals!!! Coach Fitz is steadily keeping aprised of all information leading up to the 18th. With tables being scooped up and tickets printed and sold everyone truly is excitd for the big day. This year will be that much more special as The WHIP's own Paige Mason 2009 Ringside Champion shows up. (More to come on that later, stay tuned) Just curious, how many of you avid BLOG readers have a fight scheduled for the 18th? I am only asking as I see some really talented people in the gym. The stamina and dedication that most of you put in is very admirable. But of course with instructors like Tommy and Mark running such intense classes, what fighter wouldn't be ready to take on an opponent? Truly though, let us not forget Coach Fitz, between keeping the gym in top shape, getting the business aspect of running your own gym under wraps and training with 2009 Ringside Champ Paige Mason and Pro fighter Brock Arthur (which reminds me keep your eyes posted here for news of August 21st's big brawl!) how does he do it? Admirably he has the energy of 3 men and the dedication of 100! Way to go Coach Fitz without you Kitchener wouldn't have the best boxing club to enjoy!

The day you missed out on if you were not there.

July 25th 2009, trying to bypass a 2 mile long line up of girls in band T's and high neon color socks was how some of us from the gym spent our Saturday afternoon. At the annual Beat Rocks the Block Coach Fitz had a great set up beside Morel Kelly to showcase his T-shirts, hats and boxers (thats fighters everyone, not underwear). Actually before I continue I do have to send a huge mention to Morel. Without him most of us would have been extremly wet! Actually what I want to say is thank you for the tremendous support you offer the gym and Coach Fitz. Morel you truly are a great guy and from what I saw Saturday a hard hitter. Yes Morel got out there and gave it a go with his daughter on the heavey bag.

So with the help of many of the gyms members, pamphlets were passed out and a great awareness was made about the club. When I told people that the gym was located in the old Tannery building there were alot of shocked faces... I personally don't know why but I kind of just went with it. the day itself was full of great surprises, besides the wonderfully colorful outfits and really loud music we had alot of people try out the speed bag and heavey bag. Kids hit that heavey bag so hard I swear you could hear them grunting, women came over and chatted with Coach Fitz about his fitness classes, truly the day was people filled.

I do have to mention for everyone that was there, next time we should bring in some snacks... I am thinking Oreos?

See you at the next event!

what interest's you!

With events in full swing and classes being attended by new and old members I got to thinking...whats up with the members from The W.H.I.P. Whats everyone up to this summer? We had great support at the Healthy Living Show, and with Beat Rocks the Block July 25th we wonder what else has everyone moving? Who is going to the beach, and who is having BBQ's? I myself just enjoyed a sweet Pig Roast....And august 21st Brock Arthur has got another potential fight. His last bout was definitely something to remember.............

Going back to I believe it was Belleville July 19th 2008? With sweet VIP tickets I witnessed Brock Arthur in his pro debut knock out Ray Kovinic of Niagara Falls in the first round. Brock was trained by the one and only former professional world boxing champion Fitz 'The Whip' Vanderpool of Kitchener and Richard Lewis of the Durham Boxing Academy.

Truly it was an amazing fight and I am looking forward to August 21st 2009. Details to follow but that is what one of my Friday nights entails this summer.

What about you, what are you doing?

A big thank you

This Saturday The WHIP had quite the set up @ Kitchener's Children's Museum. From the great big white WHIP sign to Moya and Stephanie's gloves, right down to Davey's hand pads. The set up itself was great, and the volunteer support was even better. With Moya, Stephanie, Penny, and Laurie donned in red WHIP shirts and black bottoms, the view was nothing less than spectacular. Right from the start the people (especially) little boys made their way over to our table strapped on the gloves and one after the other hit the heavey bag set up beside our table.

The day was full of laughs, one memorable moment was when a boy no older than the age of 5 strapped on pink Everlast gloves and proceeded to hit the heavey bag for 45 seconds. With Davey complimenting him on his speed, the little boy turned back around and while removing the gloves looked Stephanie dead in the eye and said "thanks I needed that, I haven't been boxing in years". Now you really have to picture this, a small child all of 3 feet, with honking PINK 12 ounce gloves on...talking in years! A very good laugh!

Throughout the day members of the WHIP made their way in to hang out at the table, hit the bag, and hand out flyers. A big THANK YOU goes out to the Mason family, Scott, Albert, Moya, Laurie, Stephanie and Davey. All hung out and offered what advice they could, did a little boxing, and well just showed their support to a gym they all love.

Thanks again all, and truly I cannot wait to enjoy another event with everyone!

The Children's Museum plays host to The Healthy Living Show

So summer is FINALLY here! With that being said events indoors and out are in full swing. And just like a family gathering in Grand Bend or perhaps Wasaga Beach, The W.H.I.P Boxing Academy is planning on a small gathering themselves. This weekend Saturday June 27'th The Waterloo Regional Children's Museum plays host to the Healthy Living Show.

The Healthy Living Show is a consumer show to promote companies who offer products and services that support healthy lifestyle choices, environmentally sound products and information to consumers about healthy living.

So what we are looking for is some volunteers, an hour of your time is all we are looking for. We will be handing out flyers and possibly doing some demonstrations. Already we have a few of the ameature boxers signed up and raring to go, we have Davey Hodges offering 11 to 1 p.m. with Paige Mason directly after from 1 to 2. But we absolutley cannot forget that Penny Mason with be there as well, Paige does need a ride!

But we want everyone, the more the merrier. Lets show Kitchener/Waterloo the great group of people that come together all days of the week to work out and have fun! The sign up sheet is located on the table directly through the entrance of the gym.

See you all there!

Givin it a Go!

You think you got what it takes?

S o o o o o o o o o o o oo o I decided to venture into 113 Charles St there on Monday evening. Mistake no, will I do it again sure, does my body hate me for it, YES! Coach Mark Mason, what can I say...you better be feeling in tip top shape to attend his class. Constant combo's, jumping jacks, push ups, and so on and so on and so on. Oh and lets not forget Fitz standing right there ready to pounce if your stance is incorrect or your jabs are a little sloppy! The 2 of them together proves the class is one sweaty ordeal. As Coach Mason yelled " BOX, HIT" all I could think was " WATER, WATER". However, there is one person I HAVE to mention in this blog, Paige Mason. What a champ! Not only does she have the medals to show for it, but there she was right beside me double punching and producing triple the energy any one person had in the class. Truly I admire her and I am very much aware at what a powerful young boxer she is.

To any one of you who has not been to a Monday or Wednesday class, come out and enjoy the zone your put in and sweat you produce! Not like any other class it gets your heart racing and your jabs flowing. Also don't foget to come by early Monday as you may be entertained by some great sparring. This past Monday I had the opportuniy to witness Denton Dailey and Davey Hodges get in the ring and show how fast and precise boxing can be. But the treat was seeing Fitz himself in the ring with Denton. The two of them could charge admission to their sparring alone. Quick body shots and thoughtful power punches. Hey if your lucky you might be the next one in the ring!
